What are Wisdom Teeth?

Wisdom teeth, also known as third molars, are the last set of teeth to emerge in the back of the mouth. They typically appear between the ages of 17 and 25.

Wisdom teeth were useful to our ancestors who had larger jaws, but modern jaws are often too small to accommodate them.

Preparation

Preparing for a wisdom teeth removal procedure involves taking certain steps to ensure a smooth and successful experience. Here are some guidelines to help you prepare:

  • Schedule a Consultation: Make an appointment with your dentist or oral surgeon to discuss the wisdom teeth removal procedure. They will assess your specific case and provide personalized recommendations.
  • Discuss Medical History: Inform your dental professional about any medical conditions you have, medications you are currently taking (including over-the-counter and herbal supplements), and any allergies or sensitivities you may have.
  • X-rays and Examination: Your dental professional may take X-rays or use other imaging techniques to evaluate the position and condition of your wisdom teeth. This will help them determine the best approach for the extraction.
  • Medications: If prescribed or recommended by your dental professional, start taking any prescribed medications (such as antibiotics or pain relievers) according to the instructions provided. Follow the recommended dosage and complete the full course of medication.
  • Arrange Transportation: Since the effects of anesthesia can impair your ability to drive or operate machinery, arrange for someone to drive you to and from the appointment. It is also helpful to have a responsible adult stay with you for the first few hours after the procedure.
  • Plan for Recovery: Prepare your recovery space at home by having soft foods, cold compresses, and any prescribed medications ready. Stock up on items like yogurt, smoothies, mashed potatoes, and soup, as these are easier to consume during the initial days of recovery.
  • Follow Pre-Procedure Guidelines: Your dental professional will provide specific instructions for the day of the procedure, such as avoiding food and drink before the surgery, wearing comfortable clothing, and maintaining good oral hygiene.

Remember to communicate openly with your dental professional and address any concerns or questions you may have.

By following these guidelines, you can help ensure a successful wisdom teeth removal procedure and a smoother recovery.

Procedure

The wisdom teeth removal procedure typically involves the following steps:

  • Anesthesia Administration: Before the procedure begins, your dental professional will administer the agreed-upon anesthesia. This could be local anesthesia, IV sedation, or general anesthesia, depending on your case and preference.
  • Incision and Access: Once the anesthesia has taken effect, the dental professional will make an incision in the gum tissue to access the wisdom tooth or teeth. In some cases, a small amount of bone tissue may also need to be removed to fully access the tooth.
  • Wisdom Tooth Extraction: The dentist or oral surgeon will carefully remove the wisdom tooth from its socket. If the tooth is impacted or not fully erupted, they may need to gently break it into smaller pieces for easier extraction.
  • Stitching (If Required): In some cases, the dental professional may need to stitch the incision site to promote proper healing. They will use dissolvable or non-dissolvable stitches, depending on your specific needs.
  • Gauze Placement and Recovery Instructions: Once the tooth is extracted and any necessary stitches are placed, a piece of gauze will be inserted into the extraction site to help control bleeding. The dental professional will provide you with detailed post-operative instructions for your recovery period.
  • Recovery and Follow-up: You will be monitored in a recovery area until the effects of the anesthesia wear off. Once you are awake and stable, you will be given further instructions for the recovery process, including how to manage any discomfort, swelling, and potential complications.

It’s important to note that the specifics of the procedure may vary depending on the complexity of the case and the individual’s unique situation.

Your dental professional will explain the procedure in detail and address any concerns you may have before the wisdom teeth removal takes place.

Benefits

Wisdom teeth removal offers several benefits for your oral health and overall well-being. Here are some key benefits of undergoing wisdom teeth removal:

  • Prevention of Dental Problems: Wisdom teeth often lack sufficient space to fully emerge, leading to impacted or partially erupted teeth. This can cause a range of dental problems, including overcrowding, misalignment, and damage to neighboring teeth. Removing wisdom teeth eliminates the potential for these issues to arise.
  • Reduction of Pain and Discomfort: Impacted or partially erupted wisdom teeth can cause significant pain and discomfort. Removing them relieves the associated pain, discomfort, and inflammation, providing you with relief and improved oral health.
  • Prevention of Infections and Cysts: Impacted wisdom teeth can create pockets in the gums where bacteria can accumulate, leading to infections, gum disease, and the formation of cysts or tumors. Removing these teeth eliminates the risk of such infections and reduces the chances of developing more serious oral health complications.
  • Preservation of Oral Health: By removing wisdom teeth, you can preserve the overall health of your mouth. It allows for better oral hygiene practices, as fully erupted and properly aligned teeth are easier to clean and maintain. This reduces the risk of tooth decay, gum disease, and other oral health problems.
  • Prevention of Bite and Jaw Problems: Wisdom teeth can exert pressure on neighboring teeth, causing crowding and shifting. This can negatively impact your bite alignment and jaw function. Removing wisdom teeth helps maintain proper bite alignment and reduces the likelihood of jaw problems, such as temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders.
  • Improved Overall Comfort: Wisdom teeth removal can enhance your overall comfort and well-being. By eliminating pain, discomfort, and potential complications associated with problematic wisdom teeth, you can enjoy improved oral health and a better quality of life.

It’s important to consult with your dental professional to determine if wisdom teeth removal is necessary in your case. They can evaluate your specific situation and provide personalized recommendations based on your oral health needs.

Aftercare

Proper aftercare following wisdom teeth removal is crucial for a smooth recovery and to minimize the risk of complications. Here are some general guidelines for post-operative care:

    1. Follow Instructions: Carefully follow any post-operative instructions provided by your dental professional. These instructions may include specific guidelines for pain management, swelling reduction, oral hygiene, and diet.
    2. Manage Discomfort and Swelling: Take pain medications as prescribed or recommended by your dental professional to manage any discomfort. Applying cold compresses to the outside of your face in the first 24-48 hours can help reduce swelling.
    3. Gently Bite Down on Gauze: Bite down gently on the gauze pads placed over the extraction sites to control bleeding. Change the gauze pads as instructed, usually every 30-45 minutes, until the bleeding stops.
    4. Oral Hygiene: Maintain good oral hygiene, but be cautious around the extraction sites. Avoid brushing or rinsing your mouth for the first 24 hours. After that, gently rinse your mouth with a warm saltwater solution (half a teaspoon of salt in eight ounces of warm water) after meals and before bed. Resume brushing your teeth after the first day, but avoid the extraction sites.
    5. Diet and Fluids: Stick to a soft or liquid diet for the first few days, gradually introducing solid foods as tolerated. Avoid hot, spicy, chewy, or crunchy foods that could irritate the extraction sites. Drink plenty of fluids, but avoid using a straw, as the sucking motion can dislodge blood clots and delay healing.
    6. Rest and Recovery: Take it easy for the first few days after the procedure. Rest and avoid strenuous activities to allow your body to heal properly.
    7. Avoid Smoking and Alcohol: Refrain from smoking and consuming alcohol, as they can delay the healing process and increase the risk of complications.
    8. Attend Follow-up Appointments: Schedule and attend any recommended follow-up appointments with your dental professional. They will monitor your healing progress and ensure that everything is proceeding as expected.
    9. Report Any Concerns: If you experience severe pain, excessive bleeding, prolonged swelling, persistent fever, or any other concerning symptoms, contact your dental professional immediately.

Remember, these are general aftercare guidelines, and your dental professional may provide specific instructions based on your unique case.

By following these guidelines and seeking appropriate professional guidance, you can promote a smoother and faster recovery after wisdom teeth removal.

Wisdom teeth are the four molars that are located at the back of the mouth. They usually erupt between the ages of 17 and 25. In some cases, wisdom teeth can cause problems, such as crowding, impacted teeth, and infection.

If you are experiencing problems with your wisdom teeth, it is important to see a dentist. A dentist can remove your wisdom teeth in a safe and painless manner.

You may need to have your wisdom teeth removed if they are causing problems, such as:

  • Crowding: Wisdom teeth can sometimes come in sideways or at an angle, which can cause crowding in the mouth. This can make it difficult to clean your teeth properly, which can lead to cavities and gum disease.
  • Impaction: Wisdom teeth can sometimes get stuck under the gum tissue or bone. This is called an impacted wisdom tooth. Impacted wisdom teeth can cause pain, infection, and other problems.
  • Infection: Wisdom teeth can sometimes become infected. This can be a serious problem, and it is important to see a dentist right away if you think you have an infected wisdom tooth.

Wisdom tooth removal is a surgical procedure that is performed by a dentist. The dentist will numb the area around the wisdom tooth with a local anesthetic.

Once the area is numb, the dentist will make an incision in the gum tissue and remove the wisdom tooth. In some cases, the dentist may need to break the wisdom tooth into pieces before removing it.

The amount of time it takes to remove a wisdom tooth varies depending on the number of wisdom teeth that are being removed and the complexity of the procedure. In general, wisdom tooth removal can take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour.

The risks of wisdom tooth removal are rare, but they can include:

  • Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Dry socket
  • Nerve damage
  • Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder

The recovery time for wisdom tooth removal varies depending on the individual. In general, most people are able to return to their normal activities within a week of the procedure. However, it is important to follow your dentist’s instructions carefully during the recovery period.

After wisdom tooth removal, it is important to follow your dentist’s instructions carefully. These instructions may include:

  • Applying a cold compress to the area
  • Rinsing your mouth with salt water
  • Taking over-the-counter pain medication
  • Avoiding strenuous activity
  • Eating soft foods
  • Avoiding smoking and drinking alcohol

The recommendation for wisdom teeth removal can vary depending on individual circumstances.

While some individuals may experience complications or potential dental problems due to impacted or partially erupted wisdom teeth, not everyone requires removal.

In cases where the wisdom teeth are fully erupted, properly positioned, and not causing any issues, some experts may recommend monitoring them rather than immediate removal.

It is important to consult with your dental professional to determine the best course of action based on your specific situation.

I wouldn't recommend him to anyone. It's either he doesn't know what he's doing or he's chasing to claim more from medical aid. My daughter went there on Monday to take out a wisdom tooth (it was not painful at the time). He injected her on the gums and sent her for x-ray afterwards. After x-ray results that's when he saw that actually he can't take out that tooth but four of them have be removed from the theater. I mean who starts with injection before x-rays 🤷? You can't start with the last procedure and end with the first one. If he started with what comes first he could have seen that there was no need to inject the poor child. So he just caused my daughter an unnecessary pain cos the tooth was not taken out. He injected her for fun nje. So if you love yourself, don't even try going there. On top of that, when I enquired about this, he was so rude to the core!!!! And unprofessional at the same time. I will book my daughter to someone who knows her/his story,.
